A few words about us
Let us introduce ourselves
Caskmaster is looking to be a helping hand on whats going on and who’s doing what in the craft spirits sector. There is a developments a plenty in this exciting area and we are looking to provide our visitors here with information and views.
The craft sector is so inspiring and covers such a wide range of development it deserves a bit of focus and thats what I intend to provide. I will look to give an insight into the products, of course, but also the personalities and the structures of the businesses as they develop and grow.
When I look at whats going on you can’t help but notice how these smaller organisations are working to get a foothold in the market. As one of the formerly smaller carmakers commented
“It’s not about the big and the small, it’s about the fast and the slow”
And long may that drive innovation and great products and long may we cover it.
How we Got Here
How it all came to be…
My journey to this point was inspired by a number of events. Firstly I could see the immense amount of interest that the craft spirits sector was creating with some stunning products and some really innovative thinking. Secondly I was winding down the business I had set up and had time to have a look around and get involved in the area I loved. I studied again and this brought all the old feelings back. I wanted to learn more, to understand how these businesses get through their start up phase, and most importantly to sample and taste the products that were coming from these smaller stills and companies.
My interest in beers, wines and spirits is long lived. I was lucky enough to study the science of it at Heriot-Watt University and started out in a career in the drinks trade. The people I met and the fun of being involved in the trade has never left me. While I worked in other industries it was always the drinks business that I kept an eye on, what was happening, who was developing what and what were the current trends. So after a little success in other things I was determined to arrive back in the area I wanted to be in.
To paraphrase Norm in the last show of Cheers:
You always come back to your one true love.
